Health & Wellbeing

Star Harmoneez is committed to ensuring your child is given an all-round education in musical theatre and we will strive to provide the highest level of tuition and pastoral care at all times.

Due to the nature of Musical Theatre there may be times when physical contact in drama, dance and singing is necessary. All of our tutors are aware of regulations within Child Protection and what is allowed within drama, dance and singing and will follow these guidelines at all times. We will need to measure your star and potentially help them try on costumes, this always be done over clothes or a vest. You will sign to give consent to this on your enrolment form.

Child Protection and Health and Safety procedures have been adopted in line with West Lothian Council’s Youth Let Policies and all of our tutors have been made aware of its contents.

All staff have PVG or Enhanced Disclosures and Star Harmoneez has an approved West Lothian Council Youth Let (CP no 561).

There are 3 certified First Aiders:

Amy Balfour, Class Assistant (Student Nurse)

Aimie Trueman, Co-Principal

Megan Telford, Student Tutor

An Accident/Incident Book is on hand at all times.

When you enrol into Star Harmoneez Musical Theatre School, you are asked to complete a form which requires certain information such as name, age, D.O.B, emergency contact details and it also includes a section for medical details where we ask that you list anything that we need to know about your child which could potentially affect their participation on a Tuesday night or Saturday afternoon. Please know that all information is kept private and confidential under GDPR.

We require all children to have a signed photo permission form - this will cover the child for the entire year and allow us to take photos and also post photos on our website and social media pages for various relevant purposes.

Our Teenz are a very special group and whilst we have high expectations of all our starz, our expectations for our Teenz are slightly higher. Teenz should take on a leadership role and help out whenever possible with the younger children. They will provide inspiration for our younger students.

With regards to shows, parents are required to help out with at least one show either backstage or in the dressing room. If this really isn’t possible, please nominate a family member in your place. If you really are not able to help at the shows, you should be in the audience which will help with ticket sales and we would appreciate help in the run up to the shows with set/prop making and sourcing or in any other way deemed appropriate.

It became apparent Allisons skills in Music were a real asset within Primary and after 10 years in mainstream Allison secured a permanent music specialist position within West Lothian Council and taught in a number of Primaries and Special Needs schools developing the music curriculum and raising children's self-confidence.

Allison is now following her heart after losing her inspirational son Jak to a rare cancer in 2015 and is working full time in Jak's Den as Chief Executive, supporting young cancer patients and their families and those bereaved.

Allison has produced and directed many shows in schools and in the early days of Star Harmonies Ltd. She promoted her talented daughter Aimie to Co-Principal and Director in 2017 after taking on the role of Producer and Director for our Shows for the last six years which she does with ease having a real gift for seeing "the whole picture".

Allison is confident the standard will continue to rise as it has done every year thanks to her professional qualified staff, and she will contribute to encourage every child and adult to believe in themselves and reach their full potential.

Aimie graduated from Fife College in 2017 with a Higher National Diploma in Musical Theatre with an A for her graded unit after gaining her Higher National Certificate in 2016 at Fine Arts Centre of Excellence. In the summer of 2017, Aimie spent 10 weeks in New York, USA as an Assistant Theatre Director at French Woods Performing Arts Camp. This was such a fantastic opportinity for Aimie as she was able to share her knowledge and skills with campers at French Woods and also learn from the other highly experienced practitioners teaching within Camp. On her return she decided to further her MT skills for a short amount of time at the Emil Dale Academy of Performing Arts just north of London.

Allison, Aimie’s mum enrolled her in dance classes when she was 2 years old, from there she joined a stage school at the age of 6. Aimie then started to realise that this was her passion and far more than just a hobby. She gained a Distinction (after gaining 92 out of 100) for her Grade 8 Musical Theatre London College of Music Exam. Aimie practices the vocal technique Estil and has completed her Level 1 training.

Aimie has already had a few professional acting jobs. She was an extra on the TV show ‘Waterloo Road’ and she was a featured actress for an Irish ‘Safefood’ Government Advert.

When her brother Jak took ill in 2014, Aimie took over from her Mum, Allison and has been extremely involved with Star Harmoneez ever since. She has always choreographed for Star Harmoneez, the past 6 years Aimie has produced and directed the shows, she has designed the programmes, created Star Harmonies website and much more.

In July 2018, Aimie set up AJency which is a Spotlight approved Children & Young Performers Agency. This was a very exciting moment for her as this meant she was able to form fantastic connections within the industry to further our starz training and future careers in the arts. She is delighted that one of her clients (and a SHMTS alumni) Hannah Grace Knowles landed her first professional job in 2019 and can be seen on the CBeebies TV Show "Molly & Mack" as the character 'Caitlin'.

Aimie is also very proud to be a part of the Creative Team for Bellsquarry Primary School's Glee Choir. Aimie alongside Judith England (previous Star Harmoneez tutor and Liv'n Harmony Singers Choir leader) lead Bellsquarry's Glee choir - in 2019 the choir won their West Lothian Sectional, Edinburgh Heat and proceeded through to the Final with only 8 other choirs.

Aimie was very excited that Star Harmoneez celebrated its 5th Birthday in 2017 and is already planning our 10 year celebrations for 2022! She cannot believe that she was only 14 when she started teaching. She would like to thank her Mum, Allison for all of the support and guidance she has given her over the last 8 years as she has helped her mature as a tutor and as a person.

Matthew is a creative learning and drama facilitator who works with various groups across West Lothian. Matthew started attending a youth theatre in Livingston when he was twelve and hasn’t looked back since! He has performed in shows such as Dracula, Women in Power, Animal Farm and lots of devised pieces. Matthew’s interest and passion for theatre led him to graduate in 2018 with a first-class honour’s degree in Drama and Performance from Queen Margaret University. He specialised in community theatre, theatre in educational settings and directing. Matthew is also the Artistic Director at the Regal Youth Company – a youth theatre based in Bathgate. He first came into contact with Star Harmonies while researching his honours project in his final year at university. The project was about the accessibility and benefits of participating in theatre activities in West Lothian. He came along to Star Harmonies for some research meaning he first met Aimie and Allison a whole year before he started as a tutor! Matthew started tutoring in January 2019 and he is absolutely loving being part of the team!

Megan started dancing at the age of 2 but her passion for musical theatre started right here at Star Harmonies. Megan joined Star Harmonies as a student at their first ever Easter Workshop in 2012. She then went on to join their weekly classes and has played principal roles in some of their shows such as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. After volunteering at dance classes to complete her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, Megan was invited to join the team as Student Tutor in 2018 and has enjoyed watching the children grow in ability as much as she has grown in confidence with her teaching. For the last three years Megan has been studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as a junior musical theatre student.  Megan can also be seen performing with Airdie & Coatbridge Amateur Operatic Society and The Livingston Players with her most recent role being Maria in West Side Story.  Megan is due to start studying Musical Theatre at HNC level at New College Lanarkshire in September 2020.

Laura is one of our fantastic class assistants with years of teaching experience. She is based with our Minis who range from Nursery-P3.

Amy is another of our class assistants. She helps across all age groups and is also our go to first aider given that she is currently training to be a Child and Learning Disability Nurse.

At Star Harmoneez MTS we hold regular workshops for our Starz either within classtime or optional extras with industry professionals to give our starz as many opportunities as possible.
